Hapdeok Catholic Church in Dangjin

This Catholic church was built in 1929 in Gothic style. It was preceded by the Yangchon Church built at Sanggung-ri, Godeok-myeon, Yesan-gun in 1890(the 27th year of King Gojong`s reign). In 1899, Rev. J.J.L. Curlier, the first parish priest of Hapdeok, built a Korean-styled church on the current site and changed its name into Hapdeok Catholic church. In 1929, Pater P. Perrin, the seventh parish priest, built the present brick Gothic church. In 1960, the parish was divided into two – Old Hapdeok Church and New Hapdeok Church. So this church was called Old Hapdeok Church but now the name was restored to Hapdeok Church as original. From the early years of Catholicism in Korea, Hapdeok district has been the site of significant historical interest. In 1866 (the 3rd year of King Gojong`s reign), during Byeong-in persecution, it had been the refuge of foreign missionaries before they arrested and relics of that time are preserved in Shin-ri secondary station.
