제방의 서쪽 보수할 때의 기록을 적어둔 중수비
합덕읍 합덕리 즉 성동리로 들어가는 마을 입구에 8기의 합덕방죽과 관련된 비석이 서 있다. 2기는 화강석재로 만들어진 옥개형 이수에 장방형의 대좌를 갖추었고, 나머지는 반원형의 석비이다. 그 중 최고의 것은 1767년(영조 43)에 세운 연제중수비(높이 136.5cm, 넓이 49.7cm, 두께 22cm)이다. 1800년(정조 24)에 건립한 연제중수비(높이 88.5cm, 넓이 43.5cm, 두께 34.2cm)와 1822년(순조 24)에 중수한(높이 113.5cm, 넓이 52.2cm, 두께 15cm) 것 등이 있다. 축조 시기에 대해서는 두 가지 설이 있다. 하나는 후백제 견훤이 왕건과의 전투를 위해 군마용으로 우물을 파 놓았다는 설과 다른 하나는 『신증동국여지승람』 면천 산천조에 나오는 벽골지가 합덕지라는 것으로 삼한 또는 삼국시대에 축조되었을 것이라는 설이다. 아무튼 이 제방은 고려시대 이전으로 그 축조 시기가 올라가는 것은 확실하며 벽골제의 예로 보아 백제시대까지 소급될 가능성도 없지 않다.
The shrine of Solmoe
The birth place of Korea's first Catholic priest, St. Andrew Kim Dae-gun
This place is named “Solmoe” because pine trees (“Sol”) are clumped together as a hill (“moe”). It is the birthplace of the first Korean Catholic priest, St. Andrew Kim Dae-gun. Since Korean Catholic church had been established in 1784, this place has been the residence of martyrs of 4 generations. Pius Kim Jin-hu (martyred in 1814), great grandfather of St. Andrew Kim; Andrew Kim Jong-han (martyred in 1816 at Gwandeokjeong, Daegu), great uncle of St. Andrew Kim; St. Ignatius Kim Je-jun (martyred in 1839 at Seosumun, Seoul), St. Andrew Kim’s father; and St. Andrew Kim (martyred in 1846 at Senamteo, Seoul). The place is called “Bethlehem of Korea” - St. Andrew Kim realized his vocation here at his youth. He was born here on August 21, 1821. He received his priestly training at Macau from 1836 until he was ordained at Shanghai in 1845. He returned to Joseon and was arrested and beheaded on September 16, 1846. On July 5, 1925, he was beatified by Pope Pius XI, and on May 6, 1984, he was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II.
후백제를 세운 견훤이 신라말기에 축조한 것으로 원래는 곡창지대인 합덕평야를 관개해 주던 방죽이 있었는데, 현재 저수지는 농경지로 변하고 제방만 원형대로 길게 남아 있으며 제방이 곡선으로 이루어진 것이 특징이다. 이 못에는 연꽃이 많아 연지(蓮池)라고도 불렸다. 본래 제방은 6개 마을에 관개하는 9개의 수문이 있었으며 평지로부터 높이 7.8m, 전체길이 1,771m에 이르는 큰 방죽으로, 흙을 쌓아 만들었으나 후에 돌을 이용하여 보수한 부분도 보이고 개수할 때 그 기록을 적어둔 중수비가 5기가 남아 있으나 당초 축조된 정확한 연대는 기록이 없다. 합덕제는 1989년 4월 20일 충청남도 기념물 제70호로 지정되었으며, 제 옆에 종합농경문화 박물관인 수리민속박물관이 개관되어 운영되고 있다.

Chungcheongnam-do Monument No. 146 / 115 & 116 Songsan-ri, Wookang-myeon, Dangjin-city
In 1906, the 60th anniversary of St. Andrew Kim Dae-gun’s martyrdom, Rev. Krempff, who was in charge of Hapdeok parish, investigated the birthplace of the saint according to the testimonials of residents. In 1946, a monument to the memory of the 100th anniversary of saint’s martyrdom was erected and this place has been made up as a shrine with a clump of pine tress. In 1998, the birthplace was designated as Chungcheongnam-do Monument No. 146 through the researches of cultural heritage committee and the discovery of old roof-tiles. In 2004, the inner house was restored as you see it.
